A recent press release from Bacs Ltd regarding internet security has been brought to our attention. The press release states that, “The internet and internet security are moving on, and this could affect access to the service which is used for collecting Direct Debit or making Bacs Direct Credit payments”.
As a Bacs approve software supplier, we understand that this could be a cause for concern for some of our customers, but we wanted to reassure you that this will not affect the usage of our software and nor should you notice any difference whilst using the service.
The changes that Bacs mentioned is regarding a more sophisticated level of internet security, known as SHA-2. SHA (Secure Hash Algorithm) is a set of cryptographic hash functions designed by the NSA (U.S National Security Agency). Cryptographic hash functions are mathematical operations run on digital data; by comparing the computed “hash” (the execution of the algorithm) to a known and expected hash value, a person can determine the data’s integrity.
We have been aware of these security changes for some time now and our in-house developers have been assisting with Vocalink by submitting feedback on their test service and beginning to put plans in place to implement the SHA-2 changes to our software as soon as it is made possible.
In summary, we promise that none of our customers will be affected by these changes and they will be able to continue to use their software as normal. We will also be implementing these changes in advance of the 1st June 2016 deadline.
If you have any questions regarding SHA-2, our services or any other issues, please do not hesitate to contact us. You can do so via email, Clientservices@Interbacs.com or by calling 08444 127 180.
